My previous experiences were bad but had an amazing bartender that made the drinks correctly and the food was really good! Hit or miss buy this time was a hit!

The last time I ate here was over a decade ago, but I remembered it being good, even if the atmosphere was pretty weird. Tonight we went out for a nice night out and everything was...off. Our waitress was a sweetheart but her timing was always wrong. It was really cold and my fingers went numb. We were jammed into this weird little nook with hardly any room to move. The crab cake appetizer was the star, mine was perfect, but my partner's was cool in the center. Something went wrong with the timing of our entrées and, even though we ordered at the same time as the table next to us, they were gone before our main course ever arrived. I had linguini with fra diavlo and sea creatures. The critters were cooked to perfection, but the sauce was thick, dark, and burnt, like it had been scraped from the bottom of a pot left on the heat too long. My partner had pasta primavera that was swimming in sauce, overflowing the edges of the bowl, it looked like soup. With at least two other nearby Italian options, I don't think we'll be back.

Loretta's is my 'go-to' Friday night joint for $5 martinis and tapas. If you aren't sold on the $5 martinis - everything I've ever tried here is excellent. I'm never hesitant to try anything new because I know it's going to be delectable. Favorites - spinach artichoke dip. It's deconstructed. Fresh, wilted spinach, red pepper slices, artichoke hearts sauteed in a magical, slightly butter sauce. Of course there is bread with it, that's house-made daily. Dumplings are to die for. Just the right amount of crispy (but not oily). Comes with sweet and sour sauce that has just enough heat. Loretta often pairs it with crispy, fried spinach. More recently, I had the crab & asparagus ravioli. The traditional Italian fare is incredible, of course. A handful of crab & asparagus stuffed ravioli with whole crab legs on the side. Aside from the food - I have to rave about the service. I often go and sit at the bar for tapas & martins. I can call 15 minutes ahead and they'll reserve a bar spot for me. They are friendly and make excellent recommendations.

This was, hands down, among the best meals we've ever had in Vermont. After eight years in the area, we gave Loretta's a try last Friday night. We wished we'd come years earlier. I started out with minestrone soup that was light years ahead of my grandmother's. This soup is so rich and thick it is more of a stew. You can really tell a chef by how they make something like a minestrone or something out of what's in the pantry. All the vegetables blended into a delicious, hearty soup. Spinach leaves added just before serving wilted enough to get just tender enough to mix with the soup. Pencil-thin asparagus in the soup sounded strange, but the taste didn't overpower. I would buy this soup if sold in supermarkets! It was almost a meal in itself. Glen had the breaded and fried calamari appetizer. He said it was very good. (Too busy chewing to say much more!) We both had linguine al' olio--not on the printed menu, but on the web menu. It was a small portion on the appetizer menu, but after the soup was a good size. Again, a perfect dish. The garlic wasn't burned, as you sometimes get in other restaurants. And Loretta's uses whole garlic cloves sliced, not bottled minced garlic. I can't say enough how much we enjoyed the meal--the only down notes were the herbal iced tea. Please add regular Lipton's to the menu! And the rolls were fresh but almost ice cold. I'd've liked them hot and crusty. We are going to make this a regular stop now and try some of Loretta's specialties.

The menu is immense and I only had one entrée so my exposure was scant. However, I struggled to finish and I always eat all of everything; it was boredom at first bite. I was part of a large, talkative group, each with a different dish, and not one person said one good word about any of it. A lot of food was left uneaten. I suspect everyone was as chagrined as I was and brought up with the same aphorism: if you can't say something good... It wasn't terrible food; it simply wasn't worth eating. I had gnocchi marinara (napolitana). Simple, right? The sauce tasted like it had been reducing on the back burner all afternoon. (We arrived on the dot of first dinner service.) That was preceded by overdressed salad and unbelievably bad bread. The latter came with butter but fortunately garlic oil was also available. Now, we're not out in the woods, here. Good bread is locally abundant. Good virgin olive oil and good balsamic vinegar are all around. How, then, does an Italian restaurant serve pasty, stale, utterly tasteless rolls and oil lacking any olive and much garlic flavor? If I had to guess, I'd say minced garlic from a jar in salad oil. The only "flavor" was bitterness, which makes me wonder about botulism, since if you're not using fresh ingredients, are you likely to make it fresh daily? My assessment: a sincere attempt to simulate actual food using substandard ingredients and every shortcut. If you're searching for diner food at upscale restaurant prices, this is the joint for you.

Been here twice and loved both visits. The five star rating states "as good as it gets" and this is almost, but not quite, there. I am definately a fan. All the staff are so friendly and seem happy that the customers are there which is getting to be a rarity. I had the fish special with the ginger orange pasta which was terrific. The wine list is short but good. The $5 martinis on Friday are worth the trip alone.

I really wanted to like this place, but after going there with my wife and kids one evening, I came away disappointed and with a considerably lighter wallet. First, there isn't a kids menu, but the waitress said that the kitchen would gladly make something for them. They both had penne with a light Alfredo sauce, at least that's what they ordered. The Alfredo tasted very odd and the kids only picked at it. They had an appetizer also so they weren't starving. Bread came before dinner and it consisted of ice cold white rolls of some sort, definitely not made on the premises. The olive oil with garlis to dip in was ok. I ordered the Pasta Anna, a penne alla vodka-type dish that was so bland I thought for a moment I had lost my sense of taste. My wife has a capellini primavery that was just OK. When the check came I was shocked that the amount was so high. They charged an outrageous amount for the kids pasta, something like nine bucks each. I tried to find something I liked about the place, but from the decor (if you can call it that) to the prices to the so-so food, I'm at a loss. We may give them another try, maybe they had an off night, it happens.

Tried Loretta's for the first time last evening. We had a very nice meal, though pricey, but we were prepared for that. Liked how they offered to make the kids meals "child" portion. Food was very tasty and nicely prepared, except one thing. The marinara sauce was completely "off". My children usually gobble up pasta and red sauce. They both picked at their plates and said they didn't care for the sauce. My mother tried it - (she used to own a diner, and is a fabulous cook, including amazing marinara) and said "no wonder the kids don't like this - it's really bad". She couldn't describe exactly what was wrong except that she said it tasted burned. It was VERY thick, so our thought was maybe it was just cooked too long? Or too old - reheated and reheated for days? My other child ordered the baked ziti off the specials menu. There was just too much cheese. This is a child who LOVES everything cheesy and italian but didn't do more than pick at her food saying there was just too much cheese. Overall I would go back and recommend to a friend, I'd be curious to see if the marinara is different. I would hope so!

Excellent italian. A tad pricey, but very tasty. I really wouldn't consider it "Fine Dining", as the tables are cheap an wobbly, the chairs diner-esque, but the waitstaff dressed very sharply and trying to appear upper-scale.

I think it's a good place if you want the pasta and bread type of Italian food. I've only been once, but my meal was really quite bad. (I had one of their specials.) The salads were overdressed to an extreme. Just ask for the dressing on the side.

Italian Cuisine

The immense popularity of Italian cuisine globally isn't unknown. You can find an Italian Pizzeria around every corner of almost every city in the United States. Not to forget that in every house, people enjoy mac and cheese as comfort food. But it would be wrong to believe that Italian food starts with pizza and ends with good pasta as this Mediterranean country has much more to offer other than these two dishes. In Italian Cuisine, there is a high use of fresh tomatoes, all kinds of herbs, great quality of cheese, all types of meat, seafood and fresh handmade pasta. Many find it hard to believe that Italians have been making noodles long back.

Italian and Greek cuisines are always mistaken to be same, but they are poles apart. The primary difference between the two cuisines is the use of cheese in most of the Italian dishes. Italians love to cultivate their own cheese and process them as per their food requirement. It is believed that some cheese is so expensive that cheese producers secure them in lockers.

If you are bored eating the same old pasta or pizza, you can try some of the authentic Italian dishes like Risotto, Polenta, Ribollita, Lasagna, Fiorentina Steak, Bottarga, Ossobuco, Carbonara, Focaccia, Arancini and Supplì. Another item which Italians love to relish every morning is a good cup of Italian Coffee. Once you taste a freshly brewed cup of Italian Coffee, you might not visit Starbucks ever again. Authentic Italian food is made with heart and soul, so go find a restaurant where you can relish Italian cuisine in your city.
